Eroi di carta. Scene di libri e letture nella letteratura tedesca tra Sette e Ottocento

Il presente elaborato approfondisce lo scoppio della febbre della lettura nella Germania dell’ultimo trentennio del XVIII secolo e la sua tematizzazione nella letteratura dell’epoca. Il firmamento letterario tedesco tra Sette e Ottocento appare infatti popolato da personaggi lettori, consumati da una febbrile passione per l’oggetto libro che eleggono a patria cartacea ove trovare rifugio dalle intemperie della storia e dalle ferite inferte dalla società. Il rapporto che tali personaggi sviluppano con il libro, punto nevralgico del loro itinerario di formazione, li porta a distaccarsi dal mondo empirico e a vivere una progressiva erosione dell’identità, culminante con la letteralizzazione dell’esistenza e la trasformazione metaforica in individui-libri: una testimonianza di tale processo metamorfico si riscontra nei tre romanzi di J.W. Goethe Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre e Die Wahlverwandtschaften, nel romanzo psicologico di Karl Philipp Moritz Anton Reiser, e in area romantica, nel romanzo di Novalis Heinrich von Ofterdingen e nel racconto di E.T.A. Hoffmann Der Goldne Topf. Nello studio si intende quindi analizzare l’importanza dell’esperienza del libro (e della lettura) nell’itinerario di formazione di tali individui-libri nel segno di un messaggio d’amore per la cultura e i mondi d’inchiostro e di carta di cui la letteratura tedesca si fa portavoce tra Sette e Ottocento. This thesis explores the outbreak of the reading fever in Germany during the last three decades of the 18th century and its representation in the literature of the time. The German literary firmament between the 18th and 19th centuries appears populated by reader-characters, consumed by a feverish passion for books, which they elevate to the status of a homeland made of paper —a place of refuge from the tempests of history and the wounds inflicted by society. The relationship these characters develop with the book—central to their educational journey—leads them to detach from the empirical world and undergo a progressive erosion of identity, culminating in the literalization of their existence and a metaphorical transformation into book-individuals. This metamorphic process is evidenced in three novels by J.W. Goethe, Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre e Die Wahlverwandtschaften, in Karl Philipp Moritz’s psychological novel Anton Reiser, and, in the Romantic period, in Novalis’ novel Heinrich von Ofterdingen, and in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale Der Goldene Topf. This study thus aims to analyse the significance of the book (and the reading experience) in the formative journeys of these book-individuals, as an expression of a message of love for culture and for the ink-and-paper worlds that German literature sought to voice and preserve between the 18th and 19th centuries.
