Editorial for special issue: broadening the concept of heuristics

Throughout this history, one can see that the concept of heuristics is multi-dimensional and multi-faceted, and its definition, operationalization, and usage can vary significantly across research programs such as heuristics-and-biases, the adaptive decision maker, fast-and-frugal heuristics, and simple rules. Some heuristics are expressive verbal labels that signal the way to behavioral biases, others are precise computational models that delineate the processes underlying behaviors, and yet other heuristics are flexible ideas that guide one to effective action. And, to be sure, this is leaving out a lot, including the heuristics of non-human animals and artificial agents.
