Utopie orizzontali, frontiere da immaginare: l’epopea del Nuovo mattino dell’alpinismo

Il saggio ripercorre l’esperienza del Nuovo mattino, tendenza controculturale interna all’alpinismo degli anni Settanta, attraverso gli scritti dei suoi protagonisti, mettendo in luce i tratti caratteristici di una filosofia della scalata che pone in crisi alcuni principi fondanti della tradizione alpinistica. Vengono infatti ridiscussi l’eroismo di stampo superomistico, l‘idea dell’ascensione come fuga dal consorzio sociale e il rapporto gerarchico tra uomo e natura, che compongono quello qui individuato come un “paradigma verticale” pienamente aderente alla cultura borghese della modernità. Ribaltando programmaticamente tale paradigma secondo una prospettiva “orizzontale”, il Nuovo mattino propone la riduzione della figura eroica e l’ideale di un alpinismo etico e sociale, che divengono il presupposto per un diverso rapporto tra uomo e montagna. In tal senso, un aspetto fondamentale è rappresentato dalla resistenza alla vulgata della saturazione degli spazi – fisici e culturali – della postmodernità, cui vengono contrapposti il rilancio dell’avventura esplorativa e un’istanza di radicamento nel territorio che passano attraverso l’operazione letteraria. The essay retraces the experience of the Nuovo Mattino, a countercultural movement within 1970s mountaineering, through the writings of its key figures. It highlights the defining traits of a climbing philosophy that challenges some of the foundational principles of traditional alpinism. In particular, it reexamines the heroism, the notion of ascents as an escape from society, and the hierarchical relationship between humans and nature—elements that together form what is identified here as the “vertical paradigm,” closely aligned with the bourgeois culture of modernity.By overturning this paradigm from a “horizontal” perspective, Nuovo Mattino advocates for the deconstruction of the heroic figure and promotes an ideal of ethical and social alpinism, laying the groundwork for a new kind of relationship between humans and the mountains. In this sense, a key aspect is the resistance to the widespread belief in the saturation of space— both physical and cultural—in postmodernity. In contrast, Nuovo Mattino calls for a renewed spirit of exploratory adventure and a desire for rootedness in the territory, both of which are channeled through literary expression.
