Whenever trains run in small radius curves wheel and rail wear phenomena are almost inevitable. The paper deals with a 119 m radius curve of a heavy metro infrastructure and its related wheel/rail contact issues. Due to unproper construction parameters (gauge and cant) and poor friction management, in addition to wheel flange wear on the outer wheel and rail corrugation on the low rail, an unusual tread wear of the inner wheel was found. The worn shape of the wheels also generated high impact forces over crossings. The paper describes the proposed countermeasures in terms of gauge modification and friction management improvements.

Abstract
Whenever trains run in small radius curves wheel and rail wear phenomena are almost inevitable. The paper deals with a 119 m radius curve of a heavy metro infrastructure and its related wheel/rail contact issues. Due to unproper construction parameters (gauge and cant) and poor friction management, in addition to wheel flange wear on the outer wheel and rail corrugation on the low rail, an unusual tread wear of the inner wheel was found. The worn shape of the wheels also generated high impact forces over crossings. The paper describes the proposed countermeasures in terms of gauge modification and friction management improvements.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
