Interaction and networking for adaptation in a complex and challenging environment: Special issue editorial

Although change and uncertainty have always been inherent aspects of the business environment, they have intensified in recent years. Digital transformation (Alalwan et al., 2021), artificial intelligence, and sustainability-related challenges have emerged as critical areas of concern, prompting companies to gradually develop greater awareness and responsiveness (Kapitan et al., 2019). These challenges affect both consumer and business markets. Furthermore, the recent global health crisis has significantly accelerated these transformative processes, especially in relation to digitalization and sustainability, necessitating a fundamental rethinking of organizational activities and strategies (Ritter & Pedersen, 2020). In addition, current geopolitical tensions, stemming from ongoing conflicts and the new tariff policies implemented by the United States government, are unfolding within a broader context of increasing decoupling and deglobalization (Witt et al., 2023).
