This entry describes the Caravanserai of Selim or Orbelean Caravanserai as an example of the entanglements of Armenia in the broader territory between Anatolia and Iran/Persia in the Middle Age. Through these cultural entanglements, as represented by the decorations and architectural solutions, the caravanserai constitutes a means of representing the political power of the Orbeleans, a princely family dependent on the Ilkhans of Persia but with a certain autonomy on Armenian territory.

Abstract

This entry describes the Caravanserai of Selim or Orbelean Caravanserai as an example of the entanglements of Armenia in the broader territory between Anatolia and Iran/Persia in the Middle Age. Through these cultural entanglements, as represented by the decorations and architectural solutions, the caravanserai constitutes a means of representing the political power of the Orbeleans, a princely family dependent on the Ilkhans of Persia but with a certain autonomy on Armenian territory.
