This paper presents a methodology for integrating external documents into BIM workflows using enriched IFC models and a Git-based Common Data Environment (CDE). The research responds to the growing demand for traceable, open, and affordable data manage-ment systems in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry—especially among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public administrations that face barriers to adopting commercial CDE platforms. By aligning the Git repository structure with ISO 19650 requirements and incorporating automation pipelines for model vali-dation and version control, the proposed framework enhances trans-parency, traceability, and collaboration among project teams. The app-roach enables the dynamic association of external documents—such as technical datasheets, compliance records, and maintenance manuals— with IFC model elements through structured metadata and post-export enrichment. A real-world case study of the Vasari Corridor in Florence illustrates the implementation of this methodology in a complex her-itage restoration context. The paper offers both theoretical and practical insights by demonstrating how Git-based workflow scan supportopen-BIM principles and regulatory compliance, while reducing dependency on proprietary tools. Despite certain limitations, such as the need for scripting and digital proficiency, the results show that this strategy offers a scalable and interoperable solution for digital construction management. Future research directions include enhancements to automation, alignment with ISO 21597 containers, and broader validation across diverse project types.
