The reinvestigation of the solid-state photoreactivity of ethyl (E)-alfa-cyano-2-methoxycinnamate (1) allowed us to obtain the corresponding dimer which was shown to be diethyl (1alfa,2alfa,3beta,4beta)-1,3-dicyano-2,4-bis(2-methoxyphenyl)cyclobutane-1,3-dicarboxylate (2) whose structure was proven on the basis of chemical reactivity and spectroscopic data.

Abstract
