Cretan Hieroglyphic Seals: a new classification of symbols and ornamental /filling motifs

English abstract The volume is a novel contribution to the knowledge of Cretan Hieroglyphic and deals with symbols on Cretan Hieroglyphic seals upon which CHIC has not dwelt and which may represent a further “dowel” in a writing and linguistic study still at the beginning and difficult to be carried out without the contribution of new sources. I believe that for a research of this kind a precise verification on two main aspects is fundamental: on the first side, the dating and the provenance of the seal (when this is possible), because the script-decoration connection seems to evolve in the course of time; on the second side, the shape of the seal and its classification. In the first part of the volume we analyze all these symbols, trying to place them into defined categories, following, as much as possible, the suggested criteria of CHIC, although the classification of a number of them is not so clear. In fact, some symbols considered in CHIC as “variants” may be interpreted as “new” signs and further script-groups may be singled out. In the second part a further subdivision is suggested, with the aim of clarity, into new categories which include both the symbols in the previous chapters and the symbols that also according to our search come out to be “surely” ornamental motifs. These latter form in any case a well-represented category in Hieroglyphic seals, probably chosen by the carvers following a sort of classification among the iconographic elements used in the whole glyptic of the period. Two catalogues conclude the volume, the first including the sign-groups which have been individualized only on seals and sealings but not in administrative documents, the second those seals which have not been included in CHIC but where we have recognized groups of symbols or solitary symbols belonging to the Hieroglyphic corpus. Abstract in italiano Il volume costituisce un nuovo contributo importante nello studio del geroglifico cretese. Vengono analizzati i simboli che appaiono sui sigilli in geroglifico cretese, non considerati in CHIC, ma che potrebbero rappresentare un “tassello” significativo nello studio di una scrittura e di una lingua che ancora non siamo in grado né di decifrare né di interpretare. In una ricerca di questo genere è fondamentale una precisa verifica di due aspetti preliminari: la datazione e la provenienza dei sigilli (quando possibile), perché la connessione fra scrittura e motivo decorativo sembra evolversi nel corso del tempo, e la forma e il materiale dei singoli sigilli. Nella prima parte del volume vengono analizzati tutti quei motivi che ricorrono nei sigilli e la cui natura non è chiara – se siano cioè semplici simboli decorativi o segni di scrittura – cercando di inserirli in precise categorie: si vengono così a identificare sia nuovi segni di scrittura che nuovi gruppi di segni (parole) rispetto al corpus proposto nel CHIC. Nella seconda parte si analizzano i segni di scrittura già considerati come tali in CHIC, proponendo nuove interpretazioni anche in base ai dati emersi nella prima parte. In conclusione, anche quei simboli che non possono essere classificati come segni di scrittura risultano rappresentare una categoria significativa nei nostri sigilli, e probabilmente erano scelti dagli intagliatori non solo per una questione di gusto personale ma seguendo una scelta ben motivata all’interno dei repertori iconografici usati genericamente nella glittica cretese.
