The high in-hospital mortality rates, still ranging between 59 and 90%, seem however to support the pessimistic opinion of Cokkinis, expressed more than 75 years ago, “… the diagnosis of acute intestinal ischaemia is impossible, the prognosis hopeless and the treatment useless … ”1.
