Aprompt diagnosis of acute intestinal thromboembolism with exclusion of other more usual causes of an acute abdomen is crucial to limit the consequences of bowel ischaemic injury. The high in-hospital mortality rates, still ranging between 59 and 90%, seem however to support the pessimistic opinion of Cokkinis, expressed more than 75 years ago, “… the diagnosis of acute intestinal ischaemia is impossible, the prognosis hopeless and the treatment useless … ”1.
