In November 1998, the Thoiry Komodo dragon symposium was held at Thoiry Zoological Park in France. Attendees included some of the world’s leading specialists involved with field research and conservation, laboratory studies and zoo conservation/education initiatives. Over the next few days, as papers were presented, it became clear the much new information had accumulated since Auffenberg’s book, and that those scientific advances deserved wide dissemination. Thus, the idea for this book was born. Other experts who had not presented papers at the symposium were invited to contribute to this volume so that coverage would be more complete.
