The paper deals with the optimal design of solid web steel sections of medium-large span beams according to specifications of Eurocode 3 and other national Technical Codes. Particular attention is devoted to problems connected to local buckling in compressed parts of deep sections. Both steel and composite (steel-concrete) sections have been investigated; in addition, two different geometrical types for steel sections have been considered, both belonging to the asymmetric double-T shape. The effects of variations in geometry and in the steel strength have been studied.
