In the past twenty years there has been a considerable increase in studies on fibres, be they carbon, glass or aramid, reinforcing masonry, concrete and even wooden structures. The most recent technologies for the production of high tensile strength steel have made it possible to manufacture strands of steel, then twisted into a cord and glued on to a weightless net so to cre¬ate a new type of fibre made of steel. The objective of this research is to study the behaviour of masonry arches reinforced with the steel fibre and a polymeric matrix (SRP), subjected to both loads and horizontal displacements. For this purpose, 10 arches were built in the Experimental Laboratory of the University of Florence, nine of which were reinforced. The tests on these arches lead to some useful conclusions in the field of research on fibre reinforcements. In the arches subjected only to concentrated loads, the steel fibre gave excellent results in terms of resistance and not one of the three arches tested with this material collapsed. In the case of the horizontal displacements, it was clear that the steel fibre was less effective, since all three arches collapsed at displacements that were about 5/6% less than the displacements supported by arches tested with carbon fibres in a previous work.
