Nero tragicus cantor

The figure of Nero has yet to be fully historicized, without moralistic prejudices and rehabilitative interpretations. To circumscribe the survey to the History of Theatre is not at all restrictive. The spectacular context is strategic in order to achieve a correct interpretation of the nature and life of a sui generis Caesar. From this hermeneutic perspective the essay proposes, within a contextual point of view, a critical rereading of the primary sources regarding the imperator scaenicus: from the sunny, quadriga charioteer Nero, to the apollonian citharoedus, to the tragoedus anxious on stage. La figura di Nerone è ancora da storicizzare appieno senza preconcetti unilineari: né moraleggianti né forzosamente riabilitanti. Circoscrivere l’indagine alla storia dello spettacolo non è riduttivo, anzi. La sfera spettacolare è strategica per interpretare correttamente l’indole, le opere e i giorni di un Cesare sui generis. In questa prospettiva ermeneutica il saggio propone, in un’ottica contestuale, una rilettura critica delle fonti primarie sull’imperator scaenicus: dal solare Nero agitator di quadrighe, all’apollineo citharoedus al tragoedus trepidante in scena.
