A bibliometric analysis on tourist destinations research: Focus on destination management and tourist cluster

The aim of this chapter is to analyse the academic research on tourist destinations and its evolution in tourism studies, though a bibliometric co-citations analysis on the ISI web database. We have elaborated a database of journal articles on the ISI Web of Science database. The birth and evolution of research on tourism destinations and clusters is investigated through the analysis of almost 1,000 of publications appeared during fifteen years, and its most interesting trajectories are highlighted. The results show that the dissemination of the cluster concept has been developed in the initial years of its rise and has constantly grown until recent years, whereas today its use in tourism studies has declined as compared to the rising branch of research on destination management and destination marketing.
