Destination management and competitiveness. Literature review and a destination competiveness analysis

In recent years, competitiveness in tourism has further intensified because of both the economic crisis and the process of globalization, so that the exploration of this phenomenon has shifted from the study of firms and networks of firms to that of competitiveness of destinations and among destinations. The aim of this chapter is twofold. On the one hand, the first part presents the state of the art and evolution of the literature on destination management and marketing, until dealing with the studies on destination competitiveness, seen as a prominent topic in recent research. On the other hand, the second part develops an analytical model of destination competitiveness that combines the most relevant contributions on this issue and investigates a specific case of competitiveness in an Italian tourist destination, Maremma.
