The "General Trattato de' numeri et misure" (1556-1560) is an encyclopedic work that constitutes a kind of scientific testament of Niccolò Tartaglia. In it are set out the most typical topics of abacus mathematics, but also vulgarizations of texts of Greek mathematics and revisitations of classical results in a practical key. In this sense, the work exemplarily represents the multifaceted figure of Tartaglia, an authentic Renaissance mathematician, who sought to interrelate with the circles of mathematical humanism while remaining well anchored in the practitioners' world. Tartaglia was also an esteemed abacus master and poured his nearly 30 years of experience into the General Trattato. The insights and reflections on the teaching of mathematics, with which the work is littered, not infrequently present aspects of remarkable modernity.
