In this chapter, after an overview of historic vernacular applications of masonry buildings, the physical and mechanical properties of the different components of the masonries are discussed and the more common types of masonry walls are presented. Some considerations are given to mechanical and environmental performance of masonry constructions and applications in modern architecture and innovative uses.
