Since ancient times, plant-derived compounds have been a great source of constituents used in beneficial medical treatments. Plants are a source of a wide range of molecules capable of improve healing: fibre, vitamins, phytosterols, alkaloids, sulphur-containing compounds, carotenoids, organic acids and polyphenolics. Remarkably, many of these constituents possess a scarce bioavailability due to their low water solubility or poor stability. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides arising from the degradation of starch, which can be a viable option for encapsulation technique to generate aqueous drug solutions without the use of organic co-solvents, surfactants, or lipids, as formulation adjuncts. The inclusion complexes are reported to have remarkable advantages over conventional formulations of plant actives and extracts, which include enhancement of solubility, protection from toxicity, enhancement of pharmacological activity and in vivo stability, sustained delivery, and protection from physical and chemical degradation, consequently increasing bioavailability and bioefficacy of guest molecules. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to highlight the use of cyclodextrins as encapsulating agents for bioactive plant molecules in the pharmaceutical field.
