In the archipelago of Canary Islands, more specifically in the island of La Palma, is located the huge depression of the Caldera de Taburiente, one of the world’s largest of its kind, of erosional origin and surrounded by a circle of summits of 8km in diameter. Its interior is criss-crossed by innumerable ravines that lead to the main drainage: The Ravine of Sorrows. The primitive inhabitants of the island were divided in 12 cantons, each of them governed by its own leader or Mencey. When in 1492 the Castilian troops commanded by Captain Fernández de Lugo landed on the island, the superiority of his army made many of the leaders decide to surrender. Only one canton resisted, Aceró, the corresponding to La Caldera, which thanks to its exceptional geographical conditions was impregnable. All attempts from the Spanish army to invade the Caldera failed. They never managed to conquer this natural fortification, except by deceit.
