The material in this volume was developed as part of a PRIN interdisciplinary research project in the Architectural Technologies area of the University of Florence’s Department of Architecture. The PRIN research bore the title, “Restructuring and Sustainable Improvements of Urban and Rural Spaces: A Comparison of Tourism and Historical, Cultural, Architectural, and Environmental Perspectives“ and was subtitled “Sustainable Development Models in Protected Areas.” The University of Florence Research Unit’s contribution focused on sustainability analysis as a tool for monitoring, re-interpreting, developing, and enhancing an area, especially its natural heritage. This chapter introduces the part related to the application of methods to a case study: Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park in Tuscany. It is not an application towards the validation of a methodology, but it is an application which was used as a confrontation tool for a real occurrence during the research, formulation of hypothesis, study of the state of the art on the topic, methods which still need to be studied in depth. MSRM Park (Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli) was ideal for this experimental phase, for the importance of its natural, but also historical and cultural heritage, for its position inside the region, for its management and government, and at the same time for its rather small dimension. Chapter 7 presents the Park in brief, on the basis of information supplied by the Entity which manages it and on the basis of a wide available bibliography which has been often promoted by the Park itself. There is also reference to the study conducted for the Guidelines for the Regional and Landscape plan of Tuscany - (Del. C. R. 2 July 2014 n.58) so as to place the park heritage in the regional system. After recalling all the regulations of the MSRM protected area and its government tools, the Park is presented with its natural heritage and its historical Farms. The value of the environment has been highlighted by the designation of sites inside the Park as Natura 2000 sites and by its position in a MAB UNESCO area. The chapter then presents a theme which deals more with this research that is paths for a use of the Park, in its current network and ways of improvement. Lastly, the topic of urban and infrastructural pressure at the borders of the Park is presented; it make the Park an “under siege” island if no coordination between the policies of protection and the ones for development, in particular of borderline areas will be made.
