Abstract
Over the last decades, public and private funding of museums has dramatically declined. As a result, these institutions have to seek different ways of building an income. One of these has been to transform themselves from gatekeepers and interpreters of cultural memory to institutions sharing their authority on the Web. This, though, requires a mind-set change to be mirrored by the language used, in order to popularise, share and disseminate art knowledge on the Web. Knowledge popularisation and dissemination have mainly been studied from a pedagogical and professional genre viewpoint whilst museum websites have been investigated in the cultural heritage, tourism and marketing literature. Few studies have, in contrast, analysed the language used by museum websites to popularise art on the Web. Thus, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the use of key nouns and their recurring clusters in a corpus of Italian and South African museum websites. The methodology adopted is quantitative and qualitative. The findings suggest that key nouns and clusters are useful to gain a descriptive account of the language and the most frequent types of discourse used to popularise art on the web.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
