This study analyses how economists convey their knowledge projecting themselves in their texts, adopting a personal stance in their written published lectures. The focus of this paper is on the function of the use of interpersonal metadiscursive devices such as person markers. The qualitative findings indicate that in the texts communication is linked to the disciplinary context; variations in the use of person markers underline the exigency to conform to the discipline's community to avoid being excluded from it; the adoption of diverse roles in interacting with the reader is, through different rhetorical strategies, functional to self-promotio. Moreover, the data highlight written published economics lectures are characterised by linguistic feastures typifying reserach articles and textbooks, thus resulting a mixed genre.
