The paper aims to set, for the first time, a systematic research on the Florentine owners of manuscripts, based on the data provided in the first 23 catalogues of the MDI series. After a brief presentation of quantitative phenomena, the contribution is going to present some case-studies showing how a thorough historical investigation can return to the ex libris their full value as source and give back to the owners their role as subjects of culture. Le responsabilità degli autori sono indicate a p. 133.
