Abstract

In recent years, the attention given by international organizations and governments to social enterprises (SEs) has led scholars to place greater emphasis on the environment in which SEs are set. In her seminal paper on creating a research agenda for SE, Helen Haugh (2005) argues that the environmental context in which SEs operate is an increasingly important topic that needs to be addressed. The contextual environment in which SEs operate is also considered a key issue by Peattie and Morley (2008), while Munoz (2010) stresses the importance of highlighting the connections between the socio-economic and political localities and the processes underlying the emergence, successes, failures, and impacts of SEs.
