Abstract
The growth in religious diversity took place in a context shot through with contradiction. Factors that encouraged uniformity rubbed shoulders with discourses of tolerance and accommodation and, more significantly, the actual practice of plurality, which brought different religious communities in close contact with each other, even though they were antagonistic. As Alex Walsham observes, impulses like enmity and amity, prejudice and benevolence, coexisted for a long time in early modern society, forming a “cyclical rather than linear” relationship.File in questo prodotto:
