In this paper we illustrate some instances of royal halls built in Sicily during the Normand Kingdom (1130-1189), which were apparently influenced by the oriental model of the īwān. Normand architecture was seemingly influenced by this model (which ultimately derived from Persian architecture), through the historical mediation of Abbasid, Tulunid, Fatimid and north African architecture.
