In this chapter the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of hydrogels and organogels, used in conservation of works of art, are described. In particular pHEMA and PVA based gels are presented underlined how their high viscoelasticity and retentiveness are essential characteristics for their use in cleaning of metal objects and easel paintings.
