In this chapter I shall be examining the public discourse of English 17th centiry trials. In particular, I shall investigate the forms and functions of extended narratives provided by witnesses in the evidence phase. Given that courtroom discourse is essentially made up of stories constructed for and delivered to the jury for informative and persuasive purposes, witness narratives provide a profitable source for the understanding of how aspects of the public and institutional setting shape story-telling.

Abstract
In this chapter I shall be examining the public discourse of English 17th centiry trials. In particular, I shall investigate the forms and functions of extended narratives provided by witnesses in the evidence phase.
