This chapter addresses the issue of architectural space in relation to health care in general, and place of birth in particular. It critiques the assumption that competent clinicians can provide excellent care no matter what the room or the building looks like, in the light of the fact that architecture could play an important part in the interaction between the form and function of the human body much as anatomy and physiology do. Although architectural space is not the only variable, the built environment can still impact behaviours, interactions, movements, and experiences.

Abstract

This chapter addresses the issue of architectural space in relation to health care in general, and place of birth in particular. It critiques the assumption that competent clinicians can provide excellent care no matter what the room or the building looks like, in the light of the fact that architecture could play an important part in the interaction between the form and function of the human body much as anatomy and physiology do. Although architectural space is not the only variable, the built environment can still impact behaviours, interactions, movements, and experiences.
