Telling the Truth. From socialist towards democratic antifascism and anti-totalitarianism in the 1950s.

Risposte critiche furono offerte da un gruppo di intellettuali come Nicola Chiaromonte, Aldo Garosci, Franco Venturi e Leo Valiani, che venivano dall'esperienza antifascista rivoluzionaria di Giustizia e Libertà negli anni Trenta. Bresciani focuses on the impact of the international crises between “East” and “West”, on the political and cultural debates in Italy in the 1950s. This chapter will address some crucial issues: Was it possible to be at the same time antifascist and anti-communist at the apex of the Cold War? In which forms and to what extent did the reflection on totalitarianism shape the reflection on fascism and communism? Which were the political implications of anti-totalitarianism in the Italian and European context of the 1950s? Critical answers will be offered by the trajectories and positions of some non-communist intellectuals from the Left, such as Franco Venturi, Aldo Garosci, Nicola Chiaromonte, and Leo Valiani, former members of the revolutionary antifascist group of Giustizia e Libertà in the 1930s.
