Automated vehicles, whether autonomous or part of a transport system with the roads they use and the connectivity, are here today. The roadmaps to their adoption might differ but first fully automated fleet are already for sale in 2016. These new technology has enormous disruptive potential and must be therefore treated with extreme caution; it can provide great benefit to safety and environment but can also cause great damages promoting urban sprawl and decreasing vehicle occupancy rate. This chapter uses the experience of the CityMobil2 project, the first in the world to carry thousands of passengers on automated road vehicles, to define key passages to design and manage transport systems based on automated road vehicles (ARTS). It covers from the definition to an early cost-benefit assessment to the key notions of urban integration and certification and concludes with the open issues, which remains to be solved for largescale adoption. The chapter will age quickly as this has rapidly grown to be the most researched sectors in the world and new findings will happen continuously. © 2017 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
