Composite research is one of the largest and most interesting fields in materials science. The combination of different matrices and fillers has been deeply studied producing new hybrid materials. In this chapter, the main properties of unsaturated polyester composites are discussed starting from the classification of resins based on the monomers used. The synthetic paths of polymer matrices are also briefly reported. Finally, a comprehensive description of composites and the relationship between the chemical properties of fillers and the final properties of composite materials has been divided in two different sections, dedicated respectively to inorganic and organic fillers.

Abstract

Composite research is one of the largest and most interesting fields in materials science. The combination of different matrices and fillers has been deeply studied producing new hybrid materials. In this chapter, the main properties of unsaturated polyester composites are discussed starting from the classification of resins based on the monomers used. The synthetic paths of polymer matrices are also briefly reported. Finally, a comprehensive description of composites and the relationship between the chemical properties of fillers and the final properties of composite materials has been divided in two different sections, dedicated respectively to inorganic and organic fillers.
