An English Lady, Lucie Duff Gordon, conveying knowledge about Egypt by writing letters home.

This paper focuses on the linguistic analysis of Lady Duff Gordon’s correspondence from Aegypt. Lady Lucie was born in England in 1821, but she was forced to leave her native land, Great Britain, and to settle in Aegypt in 1862 due to her deteriorating health. The aim of this paper is to discover Lady Duff Gordon’s evaluation of the new land through the linguistic analysis of her letters. The methodology employed to analyse Lady Duff Gordon’s correspondence draws from Susan Hunston’s studies on evaluation. The results of the analysis indicate that Lady Duff-Gordon’s letters from Aegypt reveal a feminine attitude towards the new land that she wants to share with her husband, her mother and her close friends.
