Sport in Florence in the 19th and 20th centuries The study features a short analysis of the most important Florence urban areas dedicated to large sports facilities. It highlights how the sporting issue represents a fundamental moment – often underestimated as part of the Florentine urban planning nowadays – that can affect crucially the properties of better-quality city life and the well-being of the citizens, in accordance with the greater opportunities offered by European cities. The resources currently committed for the issue of sporting sites are limited and their management is often left to sports clubs that deplore the lack of participation of public administrations. Naturally, this has an impact also on the city areas where the sporting sites stand; over the years, these sites tend to be increasingly cluttered and hardly accessible. On one hand, the trend is to focus on sports sites that are capable of meeting the society’s increasing needs, on the other, it is also necessary to think about the sustainability of the interventions when they are located in the historic city fabric that is in danger of being massively scarred.
