During the planning of this book, part of the On the Road series, dedicated to Rome, we realised that we were describing a city, or rather, a metropolis, that has a surreal quality of timelessness. In order to ‘read’ Rome, visitors have to dig through its many layers and anachronisms before they can understand and reconsider a concept of contemporaneity which, in this city more than any other, is completely relative.
