This article aims at reconstructing the fundamentals of Bruno Walter's theory of musical interpretation as they emerge from the conductor's publications. An example from recordings of Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben helps to understand Walter's theoretical efforts as a Bildung-related attempt to reconstruct a lost identity.
