GDPR and privacy in 5G and beyond - Which future strategy and policies for the EU?

In May 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entered into force in all Member States of the European Union (EU). It represents a fundamental normative step forward for the protection of personal data in the future internet systems.However, 5Gnetworks, Artificial Intelligence technologies and the Internet of Things raise security and privacy issues that could not be addressed only by GDPR, even assuming its complete compliance by the service providers. In addition and in synergy with GDPR rules, we need innovative scientific and technical solutions to guarantee to the users the complete control to the access and the use of thei rpersonal data. Some preliminary results are encouraging for achieving this objective, but the EU must strongly promote advanced researches on this challenging but fundamental issue in the next framework program Horizon Europe to maintain its leadership in the protection of the user personal data and to guarantee all people their unalienable rights.
