The article proposes a case study analysis of the Museums of Natural History of Florence. Mapping and describing the activities carried out by the museum for disseminating knowledge of science and nature, the analysis shows that it may represent an informal space where developing participatory forms of visitors’ education on topics related to environmental sustainability. Results suggest that the educational function of the museum involves events and exhibitions for the engagement of public and audience development. Moreover, a relevant role is played by research activities and scientific publications in order to contribute concretely to safeguarding biodiversity and enhancing naturalistic collections.
