The monastery of San Mamiliano was founded in the twelfth century by a community that followed the "Rule" of San Benedetto. In the 1230s, after a period of decline, the monastery was definitively united to the Camaldolese Congregation. The monastery has been carefully studied on the basis of a survey specially made with laser scanner techniques. The complex, built entirely of local granite, is today formed of the remains of the monastery, while the church is still substantially intact, although not lacking the effects of decay due to its abandonment. it was possible to understand the overall layout of the rooms around the cloister of the monastery. The wall remains testify to a remarkable masonry quality and the use of peculiar construction techniques in the execution of the vaulted structures. The church has a tau plan with nave and transept covered by a barrel vaults. The comparison with similar churches, built around the same time in different areas of central Italy, highlights the particular features and relevance of San Mamiliano church.
