The intervention proposes a pondering on some issues related to the drafting, and implementation, of Maintenance Plans for monumental cultural heritage, in particular with regard to stone conservation; problems are often associated with the lack of data on the durability of the treatments and with the lack of information transfer between the most specialized research fields and the operational ones. Giorgio Torraca argued that precisely the case of stone conservation was a good example to demonstrate that what was lacking in conservation technology to become a science was a memory. Being verified the possibility of ‘measuring’ and ‘quantifying’ the state of residual efficiency of protective stone treatment after a set period of time from their application and the possibility of identifying the periodic cycle to put into action the minimum conservative actions, able to prevent the reactivation or the onset of new phenomena and mechanisms of degradation, it becomes imperative to proceed with the collection of contributions for a systematization of data and to refine the operational tools in view of a real utility for the maintenance of monumental assets.
