La tormentata formulazione delle Regole del British Museum del 1839 : da Horne e Baber a Panizzi, ovvero, Del presente e del futuro di una grande biblioteca nazionale : una ricognizione

In the history of cataloging, the “Rules for the compilation of the catalogue” of 1839, published at the opening of the first volume of the “Catalogue of printed books in the British Museum” of 1841, represent the starting point of the modern normative coding. The "Rules" open the great cataloging tradition in English, a tradition that began in 1839 with Panizzi's 91 rules and reached its peak with the work of Seymour Lubetzky. The responsibility of the "Rules" is attributed to Antonio Panizzi, but they have had a troubled and complex drafting. The Rules are the result of a regulatory stratification that saw as a basis the 16 rules of Henry Hervey Baber, an expansion determined up to 73 rules made by Panizzi, and finally 2 revisions by the Trustees; the first which introduced 6 other rules, for a total of 79; the second which set the final number to the 91 rules known today. Nella storia della catalogazione, le “Rules for the compilation of the catalogue” del 1839, pubblicate in apertura al primo volume del “Catalogue of printed books in the British Museum” del 1841, rappresentano il punto di partenza della codifica normativa moderna.
