Le statue iconiche femminili di Leptis Magna. Contesti e funzione, produzione e recezione dei tipi statuari in ambito privato

This contribution focuses on the 23 iconic statues of private women found at Lepcis Magna and is structured into three parts. The first section centres on the analysis of the contexts of provenance and the honorary or funerary function of these images, while the second section concentrates on the chronology of the statues, most of which are datable to the 2nd century AD. The third section provides an analysis of the statuary types attested in Lepcis Magna. These sections are combined with a discussion reflecting on the following topics: the complex and stimulating issue of sculptural production; the relationship between local workshops and imports; the presence of sculptors and marble workers with heterogeneous training and external influences, based on the recognition of styles and peculiar techniques, the quality of the marble used, the selection of the iconographic types and the degree of adherence to the models.
