Performing (with) multiple-text manuscripts in the making of the Ethiopian sainthood: Matter and devotion in Ethiopia between the fourteenth century and the present time

Il saggio esamina in prospettiva storica, filologica, culturale e materiale, la formazione e lo sviluppo di manoscritti multitesto, redatti in etiopico, che tramandano collezioni di testi concepiti per pratiche liturgiche e di guarigione e connessi con la venerazione dei santi in Etiopia. Il saggio riscostruisce il ruolo che questi manoscritti hanno avuto nella creazione e nello sviluppo della santità etiopica a partire dal XIV secolo e come hanno contribuito a mantenerla in vita fino ai nostri giorni. In particolare, i temi principali affrontati riguardano: (1) l'acquisizione e l'organizzazione di un corpus di testi agiografici su santi stranieri in manoscritti multitesto; (2) la percezione di questi manoscritti da parte degli attori coinvolti nella loro produzione e uso in relazione alla costruzione della santità etiopica; (3) la funzione che essi hanno avuto nel riconoscere e nel legittimare la santità in Etiopia, in particolare quella dei santi locali; (4) l'uso di questi manoscritti nelle pratiche liturgiche e di guarigione. The essay offers an insight into the formation and development of multiple-text manuscripts (MTMs) transmitting works earmarked for liturgical and healing performances connected with the veneration of saints in Ethiopia. The time span covered ranges between the fourteenth century and the present time. Themes related to the role of manuscripts in the making of Ethiopian sainthood and keeping it alive are explored. The main points discussed are (1) the acquisition and structuring of a corpus of hagiographic texts in MTMs; (2) the perception of these MTMs in connection with the construction of Ethiopian sainthood; (3) their function in the authentication to sainthood in Ethiopia; and (4) their use in liturgical and healing performances.
