Antonio Santoni Rugiu (Sassari, 1 December 1921 – Florence, 28 September 2011) was an internationally renowned intellectual in the second half of the twentieth century and the first decade of the twenty-first century. He is considered one of the most important scholars of the history of education and was a lecturer and director at the Department of Educational Sciences and Formative Processes of the University of Florence, after having taught at different Italian universities and having held previous positions, including for RAI (Rai Radiotelevisioen Italiana). The proposed paper refers in particular to his life and his commitment to reflection and research on the social history of education as an innovative field of study in Italy, which developed inthe late 1970s. His volume Storia sociale dell’educazione (Social History of Education), published in 1979, represented an essential reference point for a new approach to educational research in Italy: pedagogy was no longer only considered an element of the history of philosophy, with its great authors of reference, but rather it became a reflection open to the multidisciplinarity relating to complex educational phenomena in social, economic and cultural contexts. The article is structured in three parts: the first reconstructs the fundamental moments in the life of Antonio Santoni Rugiu through his training and professional experiences, up to his beginnings as a lecturer in Italian universities; the second part describes the process that he developed in terms of researching the social history of education in Italy through his writings; the third part suggests some reflections related to the most recent trends in the social history of education.
