The Digital Mediation of Knowledge, Representations and Practices through the Lenses of a Multimodal Theory of Communication

The chapter describes and discusses the mediation of processes in contemporary digital environments through the lens of a multimodal theory of communication, one that investigates the many different semiotic resources and affordances that people use when expressing their ideas and feelings and when communicating with each other. It also contributes to debates on digitally mediated communication by integrating a dialectical perspective on mediation, which is mainly concerned with the understanding of the mutual influences of media and society, with an interactionist perspective on mediation that is most likely adopted in multimodal studies.
