Unravelling the Sustainable Resilient Region: Exploring Regional Resilience in Sustainable Transition

The chapter aims at revising the main topics related to regional resilience and combine it with the framework of sustainable development. Starting from an overview of the rising interest of resilience in the academic debate, the chapter discusses the main definitions underlining the moving from the engineering and ecological definitions to the approach of “adaptive resilience” in regional studies. This discussion contributes to identifying the main criticisms pointed out in the theory of resilience. The conclusive part wants to bring some perspectives for addressing unsolved problems of regional resilience by integrating it with the concept of sustainability.
