This article reconstructs the transformation in Christian attitudes towards Jews from the early Middle Ages to the end of the 15th century. It also illustrates the influence of the Inquisition and of the knowledge of Talmudic texts for creating the negative idealtypus of the Jew as a Christianity's enemy, with the consequent transformation of the polemic into a frontal opposition, destined to exacerbate intra-Christian discussions on Judaism, such as that between theologians Pietro Rossi and Antonio Bettini at Siena, and to trigger brutal acts of anti-ebraic hatred in Florence.
