The main objective of this thesis is to develop a model which connects the structural properties of dispersant additives with their efficacy against the agglomeration of carbonaceous particulates in lubricant formulations. Usually, dispersant performances are evaluated by means of expensive and time-consuming engine tests; for this reason, the research of new lab-scale methodologies to evaluate the performances of a lubricant formulation is compulsory. To accomplish this goal, we optimized different methodologies to study both the colloidal properties of the additives and their dispersant efficacy in model systems that mimic a lubricant oil. The final goal is to establish a structure-properties relation and concurrently understand the main factors affecting the dispersant ability of an additive.
